Q. 162 Whether the name Queen of Mercy is properly suited to the blessed Virgin?

It would seem not, for there are other names by which she could be known, better suited to her dignity, the most worthy being Mother of God. Likewise, she has been exalted to the highest position of glory; therefore, she should be called Queen of glory, because just as her Son is called King of glory, so she should be called Queen. Moreover, where she is queen, there is, as the gloss says, no mercy (misericordia) because there is no misery (miseria) in heaven; therefore, she should be called Queen of heaven because she reigns there above all the orders of the angels. Again, while glory is proper to heaven, mercy is proper to earth, but grace is common to both heaven and earth; therefore, she should be called Queen of grace. Again, as her Son is the emperor over kings, so she is empress over queens; therefore, she should be called Empress of mercy. Again, the higher orders of angels are named according to their gifts; the highest gift is love; therefore, she should be called Queen of love. Again, her Son is called God of peace and love; therefore, she should be called Queen of peace and love. Again, she is higher than the Seraphim, therefore higher than love, but nothing is higher than love but God; therefore, she ought to be named after God; therefore, she ought to be called Goddess of mercy (dea misericordiae). Again, her Son is called King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 19:16); therefore, she ought to be called Queen of queens and Lady of ladies. Again, her Son is called God of gods (Deus deorum); therefore, she ought to be called Goddess of goddesses (dea dearum). Again, (Pseudo-)Dionysius says: “You will find, however, that the divine Word [eloquia] calls not only these supercelestial essences gods, but also the holy men and most beloved of God among us.” Since, therefore, the blessed Virgin was most beloved of God and lifted above all other creatures to the illumination of the divine, she most of all is to be called Goddess of gods (dea deorum).292

But, in fact, it is more suitable that she be called Queen of mercy because the kingdom of mercy is greater in power and dignity than the kingdom of glory, grace, or justice, for while there is glory in heaven, there is mercy also on earth and in purgatory and in hell. Likewise, the Mother shares the patrimony and property of the Son, which is mercy. Only mercy encompasses the whole kingdom of God; therefore, as she is queen where he is king, she is Queen of mercy. Again, just as she is called queen of France who is lady over everything in France, so the most blessed Virgin is properly, truly, and legally lady over everything in the mercy of God, whether mercy is construed transitively, because she is the cause
